This is my summary of our Viking Herja cruise down the Rhine River. We loved how organized they were most of the time. I liked the smaller ship (no real need to do much exploring) because there were 4 floors. Our room was on the bottom floor. The main desk and dining room were on the main deck. The third floor was the lounge, and the top was the sun deck. We loved meeting new people, and most seemed to be about our age. We were busy every day until about 9 pm, and there was very little downtime, which we liked. The included tours were very good, and some people chose not to go on them.
Things we learned from this Viking cruise:
- I don’t need to bring dress clothes. No one dressed up for dinner.
- One pair of comfortable walking shoes and flip flops for the hotel.
- Rain gear is important.
- Layers keep you warm.
- I need to bring more long-sleeve shirts.
- Another wool sweater or two would have been nice so I could swap them out.
- I need silk underwear to keep my legs warm.
- No need to bring my iPad or books.
- Bring plug adapters.
- Bring business cards.
- This cruise did not have a lot of downtime.
- We ended up booking another cruise for next year and were told that we could swap the cruise for another date and location without penalty. The guy never said that we had to pay it in full within a month! We can pay it, but we were a little upset that we weren’t told that.
- We would not add days onto the end of the cruise because we are tired and ready to go home.
- Bring a flashlight. You will need it if you stay at the Radisson Blu hotel at the Zurich airport. The room is SO dark!
- Zurich is an expensive city! We ate at McDonald's in The Circle (in the airport), and we both had Big Mac Meals. When I got home, my credit card statement showed that it cost over $25!
- The Philadelphia airport was a nice airport. Going through customs went smoothly.
