Day 22: 11/18/23 At Sea

After breakfast, we sat around the pool area and relaxed. Right before lunch, it started pouring down rain, so we went inside to wait for lunch to start. After lunch, we relaxed in our cabin until dinner. We watched Westworld on TV which was an old movie but still good. After dinner at the buffet, we went to the show featuring the magician, Juan Alvarez again. Then we had some cappuccino and visited with Jeff and Holly from Colorado/Mexico. We had to turn our clocks back an hour so we should be back on Eastern Time in the morning.

Day 23: 11/19/23 At Sea

After breakfast, we sat around the pool area until lunchtime and relaxed. After lunch, we went to the port talk about Miami, and it was very nice. After that, we went back to the cabin and relaxed until dinner. After dinner at the buffet, we went to the show, Circus Story featuring the international dancers and singers. The show was the best one we’ve seen! The costumes and the acts were wonderful. I’m so glad we went to see it.

Day 24: 11/20/23 Miami

Since we planned on staying on the ship, we had to meet in the dining room on deck 6 in order to go through customs. They took us off the ship around 10:20 and we got back on the ship by 11. Even though we had our passports, we never had to show them to anyone. After lunch, we sat out by the pool and had some beers. We were really surprised when they said they were out of Miller Lite by 2:30 in the afternoon! We ended up going to another bar on Deck 5 and was able to get some Miller Lite. The ship is full and it has been crazy all day. The bars are so busy, and the crew is working hard. We went to the dining room for dinner, and I had a NY strip which was wonderful! It was the best meal I’ve had on the ship. After dinner, we had a cappuccino before going to the show. The show, Legends of Rock, featured the singers and the dancers. It was a great show!

Day 25: 11/21/23 Nassau

We didn’t get off the ship and after breakfast, we just relaxed on the pool deck. For lunch, we ate at the Oriental Plaza restaurant and we each had the “Asian Dining Experience” ($34), complimentary for Diamond members. When we got back to our cabin, I was surprised to see a note that they changed our dining assignment as requested from our assigned table with a great server to My Choice Dining. When I called to tell them that we didn’t request a change, the man at guest services kept telling me that this was a better choice because we could go to early seating. I kept trying to tell him that we had been assigned to early seating like we wanted but I finally gave up since we were only here for 2 more days. We relaxed in the cabin until it was time to go to dinner. After dinner, we stopped and had some cappuccinos before going to the show. The show featured the comedian, Matt Wright. Before the show, the Captain presented his senior officers and heads of departments.

Day 26: 11/22/23 Ocean Cay

We arrived in Ocean Cay (MSC’s Private Island) and got off the ship around 9:15. We got our favorite spot at the beach near a big sea grape tree with lots of shade. Then we got in the water which was a little cold at first but once you got used to it, it was comfortable. We met a family from Delaware (dad was from Panama and mom was from Peru). We finally got out and sat in the shade drinking Miller Lites. Sam (born in Lebanon; and from Montreal, Canada) sat near us and we visited all day. He has been on the ship as long as we have. Around lunchtime, I stopped at the food truck and got us some French fries. They were good but the ketchup gave Don heartburn so he stayed away from the ketchup. I went in the water one more time but then just stayed in the shade in all day. Around 3pm, the wind picked up and the water got a little rougher so by 3:30, we headed back to the ship. After cleaning up, we had some cappuccino before dinner. After dinner, we went back to the cabin. We were so tired that I told the housekeeper that she didn’t need to clean our room for the evening because we were going to bed early.

Day 27: 11/23/23 At Sea – Happy Thanksgiving!

After breakfast, we sat on the deck and watched the activities around the pool. Before lunch we got cappuccinos. After lunch, we went to the shops and bought a magnet. Then we went back to the cabin and packed our suitcases. Veronica, our housekeeper, had to go get our luggage tags. After packing we watched Lassie, National Velvet, and Chitty Bang Bang. During National Velvet, they announced that there was a medical emergency. A helicopter evacuation was going to take place and all open decks would be closed. Those with balcony cabins had to keep their doors closed and stay inside. After dinner, we went back to the cabin to watch TV until bedtime/

Day 28: 11/24/23 Miami

We had to meet in the theater at 8:10 (Diamond members) but we didn't get off the ship until around 8:45. Going through customs was easy because they were using facial recognition. When we walked outside, I texted Bob and he was in the parking lot right across the street. There was a fatal accident on I-95 and traffic was a nightmare. We stopped around 10:30 to eat at Bass Pro Shop. 

Things I’ve Learned

• I don’t like 4-day cruises. The guests act too crazy. Maybe because it is cheaper and attracts a younger crowd and I’m getting too old for that.
• I’m not a big fan of sushi.
• The hotel director is over 85% of the ship’s crew!
• A month on a cruise ship is long enough for me. I don’t know how the officers and crew can stand a contract that lasts for 6-10 months!
• If you wear a thong bathing suit, you need to work on making your butt cheeks tight before wearing one. It doesn’t matter what size you are.

MSC Seaside 2019

We are back on the MSC Seaside again. We left Miami on 9/28 and returned on 10/5. Our cost included the beverage package and 3G of wifi. Our cabin number is 10184 and our cabin Steward is Raysen.  We had dinner in the Seashore dining room at table 474 which is a table for 2 and our waitstaff is Norwin and Daniel. This ship holds 5119 passengers! It is 153, 516 GT, 323 m (1060 ft.) long, and has 18 decks. Our captain is Francesco di Palma, Chief Engineer is Neven Krivic, hotel director is Andrea de Vincentiis, Cruise Director is Arturo G. Melo, and Guest Relations Manager is Natan Freitas. We also saw Rowena who works in the specialty restaurant (we met her on the Divina) and Mandy-Leigh Castle, the Yacht Club Director, who we also met on the Divina/

Saturday 9/28 Embarkation

We arrived at the port at 11:30 and our ship was at Terminal F. But the parking garage is labeled Parking Garage G and it cost $22 per day. Going through security was smooth and I didn’t even have to take my computer out of my backpack. We were checked in and sent immediately on the ship. After going to the kiosk to register our credit card, we dropped some stuff off at the cabin. We ate lunch at the Biscayne Bay Buffet on Deck 16 which was very small. We realized later that the last time we were on the ship we did not ever eat at this buffet. The main buffet is on Deck 8 (Marketplace Buffet). We found the Sports Bar and had a few beers. The bartenders Leo and Avel were excellent! We didn’t wait long and got another drink whenever we needed one. At 4pm we had the muster drill and we were sent into a bar area on deck 6. I couldn’t hear or understand anything, so I knit, and Don napped. When it was over, we went back to the Sports Bar for a beer and then decided to go to the dining room for dinner. Sometime during the day, we saw Roxy and Vince, who we met on the Seaside last September. At first, we hadn’t planned on eating in the dining room but this time we decided we would and the service and food were very good. After dinner, we changed and then went to the Metropolitan theater to get a seat for the 8:30 show called Timeless. Then we went to bed.

Sunday 9/29/19 At Sea

We had a pleasant day at sea. After breakfast, we did our exercise walk on the deck with the basketball court. At 10am we went to the Cruise Critic meetup which was a huge event. They had cocktails and cake and appetizers including a martini glass full of chocolate strawberries! We met a nice couple, Jason and Amber from Ontario. I also met another officer who was on the Divina with us. After that, we walked around until lunchtime. In the afternoon, we went to the Beer Improve (for families). I was going to do the arts and crafts but it was the same as the last time, so I decided to skip it. By then we had to get ready for dinner which was Elegant night. Dinner was enjoyable and after dinner, we went to the show Wizard, which I really enjoyed.

Monday 9/30/19 San Juan

In the morning we did our exercise walk. Before lunch, we sat on the back deck and visited with this nice couple, Miles and Angie, from Port St. Lucie. After lunch, we went back to the cabin and relaxed. Around 3:30 we went to the Sports Bar to watch the ship come into San Juan. We were off the ship around 4:30 and walked around town. We stopped to have a Mallorca at El Meson. Then we found the street with the cats so I can take a picture of the street name for Dyanna. Next, we found the street with umbrellas. There were new umbrellas there and the street was closed off to cars and pedestrians. Next, we walked around until it got dark. I bought two small leather bracelets to use with my shawls (2/$5). We got back on the ship around 7pm and had dinner at the buffet.

Tuesday 10/1/19 St. Thomas

We were going to go snorkeling at Secret Harbor, but it would cost $25 for the cab ride there and another $25 to get back to the ship. We decided to skip snorkeling and just walk around town. We got off the ship around 8:30. It took us about 45 minutes to get to the farthest end of town and it was hot outside. It was about a 2-mile walk to the far end of town. We walked around for about 2 hours before taking a cab back to the ship for $4 per person. We spent the day relaxing on the ship. After dinner, we went to the show and saw The Dream.

Wednesday 10/2/19 St. Maarten

We were one of the first ones off the ship at 7am and walked to the beach (about a 30-minute walk – 1 mile) and we were swimming by 7:30. I’m glad we didn’t wait for the water taxi because we didn’t see the first water taxi until around 8:30. We got to the beach so early that all the vendors hadn’t even finished setting up their chairs. We found a spot and dropped our stuff there, but we didn’t rent chairs or umbrellas. We swam in the ocean for about 3 hours. Before going back to the ship, we stopped by to see Suzette and she seemed happy to see us. After lunch, we relaxed until we went to the Black Card Party at 5pm. We enjoyed seeing Mandy-Leigh Castle (over the Yacht Club) again. We had met her on the MSC Divina, and she remembered us. We also saw Roxy and Vince from Kansas again. We met Paul and Sue from Port St. Lucie and found out that Paul was a semi-retired real estate attorney in Florida. He didn’t seem to mind when we talked shop and was extremely helpful. After dinner, we went to the show, Fly, which was very good.

Thursday 10/3/19 At Sea

We had a sea day and just relaxed. After breakfast, we did our exercise walk. Then we went to the theater to hear the Captain’s Question and Answer session. Don had a hard time understanding the Captain. We stayed for the Master Chef show but left in the middle of it to go eat lunch. After lunch, we went back to the cabin to relax until it was time for dinner. After dinner, we were invited to the Welcome Back Party, but we skipped it to go to the show, Peter Punk. We enjoyed the show.

Friday 10/4/19 Nassau

After breakfast, we did our exercise walk and then packed our suitcases. We arrived in Nassau at noon, but we didn’t get off the ship. At 2pm we had a private tour of the Yacht Club (thanks to Mandy-Leigh Castle, Yacht Club Director). Then at 5:30, we ate dinner in the Butcher’s Cut. We didn’t get out of dinner in time to go to the show so we walked around and then went back to our cabin so we could put our suitcases in the hall.

Saturday 10/5/19 Debarkation

Debarkation was total chaos! We were told to be in the Metropolitan Theater by 7:40 and we should have been the third group off as Black Card Members (after Self Assist and Aurea Experience). They said they would call our color tag (we were lilac0 and to wait in the theater until we were called. Then the crew member announced that we had parked the ship in a “different direction” so there was only one exit off the ship (for 5000 people!). It was worrisome when I started thinking about our safety if there was an emergency! There was no order or organization. Apparently, they were making announcements around the ship but none in the theater! We waited until 9:30 and finally just joined the chaotic line to get off the ship. People were just jumping in the line and others were going in the opposite direction dragging their luggage. No one knew what was going on (crew or passengers). While we were in line, we heard the announcement that there were newly added security measures and that is the reason for the delay. Either the guy in the theater lied or the one making the announcement lied but someone was lying! Once we were off the ship, we had to get in another line for some kind of face recognition. Then we got our luggage in the warehouse area and never went through a customs check. We were finally on the road by 10:30. This chaos had us rethinking of taking another MSC cruise because this is not the first time they have had total chaos getting off the ship.

Things I Learned:

1.     Inside cabins on MSC are very small!

2.     The bathroom was smaller than the ones on Carnival.

3.     This is the same captain we had last September.

4.     The shows are in Steampunk style.

5.     I like strawberries dipped in chocolate.

6.     We don’t care for the Beer Improv show.

7.     The walk into St. Thomas took about 45 minutes and was good exercise.

8.     The walk to the St. Maarten beach was not long and if we had waited for the water taxi, we would have wasted an hour.

9.     We didn’t have to rent chairs and umbrellas since we were only there for 3 hours but we found a spot that no chairs were set so we could watch our stuff.

10.  The beverage package that came with our cruise has been well worth the money.

11.  We like the individual acts within the shows.

12.  Debarkation on MSC ships is a disaster!

2018 MSC Seaside

We were sailing on the MSC Seaside from 9/1 – 9/8. Our cabin number is 14219 and is a balcony room. This ship holds 5119 passengers! It is 153,516 GT, 323 m (1060 ft.) long, and has 18 decks. Our Captain was Francesco Di Palma and our cruise director was Gene. We sat at table 444 and our dining staff was Wilfredo and Neil.

Day 1 Embarkation:

We arrived at the port around 11:45, dropped our luggage off, parked our car and walked right into the security line. After security, they quickly checked us in and we got on the ship immediately. First, we went to Deck 8 for their buffet lunch and then we went to find our cabin. After dropping our stuff off, we walked around and explored the ship. Since drinks come with our package deal, we had some beer before the muster drill. After the muster drill, we unpacked Don’s suitcase and walked around a little more. Then we went back to the cabin and found out that I had to go to the “naughty” room to get my suitcase. They took away my power strip and will return it on the last day. At dinner (table 444), we met 2 other nice couples – Don and Anita from Kings Bay, GA and Pat and Doug from Charlotte, NC. After dinner, I went to unpack and then we went to the show featuring Frank Sinatra songs. After the show, we walked around some more, and Don had an evening snack of pizza. It was a lovely day.

Day 2 At Sea:

I got up early and hung out on Deck 8 until Don woke up. After breakfast, we walked around the back pool for an hour. I put my watch on “Outside Walk” and it picked up the movement of the ship on GPS, so it says I walked 20 miles in one hour! Then I went to arts and crafts called Iris Folding at 10. There were no irises and there was no folding! We made mosaic cards. Before lunch, we got a couple of  Bloody Mary’s. After lunch, we took a nap and watched A Knight’s Tale with Heath Ledger. At 4pm we went to the Improv comedy show which was okay, but we won’t go back. At 5:30, we went to dinner at the specialty restaurant – Butcher’s Cut. The food was good. There was some mix-up and we had 2 reservations there, so we canceled the second one for Monday. Then we went to the 8pm show – The Dream which we enjoyed.

Day 3 At Sea:

I went to Arts and Crafts today and made paper flowers. I didn’t do too well at this. After lunch, we relaxed on the balcony until dinner time. Don tried Moscow Mules and like them. They were vodka, ginger beer, and lemon or lime. I drank the bottle of Prosecco that the ship sent us. We had a nice dinner in the dining room and then went to the show – The Wizard which was really good. I love all the Cirque du Soleil acts they put in their shows.  

Day 4 St. Maarten:

We had a wonderful day on the beach at St. Maarten! We walked 1 ½ miles to the beach instead of going on the water taxi like we usually do. We got 2 chairs and an umbrella for $20. We were one of the first ones in the water at 9 am and stayed there until about 2 pm. Hubby got burnt because as usual, he refuses to wear the sunblock that I bring. We also bought a bucket of 5 beers for $10. We walked back to the ship in the afternoon and we were starving so immediately had lunch. Then we went back to the room to clean up and have a short nap before dinner. After dinner, we went to the show – My Life in Music which featured classic tunes from shows like Phantom of the Opera along with their special acts. One guy puts his arms or legs in a rope from the ceiling and then they pull him up as he does acrobatics from that rope. Then he put a metal thing on it and held on with his mouth as he spun round and round in the air! It was fabulous!

Day 5 San Juan:

We got off the ship around 8am and walked along the path going to the Old San Juan Gate. Then we walked up the stairs to walk to the fort and found this is the best way to the fort but we didn’t bring our park pass so we didn’t go in. We met up with Yolanda and Mike at 10 am at El Meson on Calle San Jose. We enjoyed visiting for a couple of hours there before the weather started looking rough. Then we walked them back to their car and returned to the ship for a late lunch. At 5pm we had the Black Card party and Don had a lot of wine. We were late for dinner but still enjoyed it. After dinner, we went to the show – Timeless. Don slept through the whole show and then we went back to our cabin. There was a late-night party and I couldn’t sleep because of the loud music but it ended around 11:30pm and I finally fell asleep.

Day 6 At Sea:

Relaxing day at sea. We went to see Madame Butterfly opera at 4. Then we saw the show Fly after dinner which was great. Of course, I love all the acts they incorporate with their music.

Day 7 Nassau:

We didn’t get off the ship and walked around the ship getting our exercise and steps. After lunch, we packed our suitcases which were pretty easy. Then we went to dinner and saw the show Peter Pan which I enjoyed. We went back to our cabin and put our suitcases in the hall and had an early night.

Day 8 Disembarkation:

Our tags were Lilac 4 and we met in the theater. Around 8:30 we called to get off the ship and it went very smoothly. We got our luggage and went through customs easily. By 8:45 we were on the road heading to Ft. Lauderdale.

Things I Learned:

1.     We really have enjoyed seeing how much MSC has improved as the cruise line grows.

2.     Embarkation went really smooth and that is a good way to start a cruise.

3.     Don’t advertise an arts & crafts lesson and then do a totally different thing.

4.     Don’t show an instructional video at arts & crafts that has nothing to do with what you are making.

5.     Cirque du Soleil acts really dress up shows with music.

6.     I need to take the stairs as much as possible instead of riding the elevator!

7.     It is interesting to learn about other cultures from the crew members.

8.     San Juan decorated a street covered with hanging umbrellas which is a permanent installation.

9.     St. Maarten – it is 1 ½ miles from the ship to the beach in front of Caribbean Blend.

10.  There is another spot on the beach in St. Maarten that advertised for $25 – 2 chairs, umbrella, 4 drinks, and shower/restrooms. We would like to try this sometime.

MSC Divina August 2017

Last week we were on the MSC Divina again for the fourth time. The price was right and we weren’t doing anything that week so we decided to sail on it again. The captain is Marco Massa, Hotel Director is Zbigniew Lisowski, Cruise Director is Andre Schlemmer, and Guest Relations manager is Carmelina Juliano. We had cabin 12285 with a full balcony. Dinner was at 6pm at table 519.

Day 1: Saturday 8/19/17

We arrived at the port at 10am and was through security and checked in by 11am. At 11:30, they let us board and we were at the Calumet Buffet at 11:45 waiting for them to open lunch at noon. The cabins were ready at 2:30pm but we could get in our cabin and drop stuff off before then. We bought a couple of books of drink tickets to use (18 alcoholic drinks for $89 and 18 nonalcoholic drinks for $49). They said we can buy more during the cruise if we need to. After lunch, we walked around and then decided to have some drinks. Don had 4 martinis and I had 2 cosmopolitans before the 3:30pm excursion talk. At 4:30 we had the life boat drill and then went back to the cabin to finish unpacking. I realized that we did not pack any dress pants for Don. After a little nap, we went to dinner at 6pm. Don wore his slip on black sports pants. We ate with a very nice couple from Michigan: Billie and Artie and the service was very good. After dinner, we walked around the deck and then went back to our cabin for an early night.

Day 2: Sunday 8/20/17 At Sea

I was up on deck at 5am playing on my computer. After breakfast, we walked an hour on the walking deck. At 10 I went to the arts and crafts where we decorated t-shirts with solar eclipse pictures using markers. Then we went to have a Frappuccino at the coffee shop. After lunch, we went back to our cabin. The ship sent us a bottle of Prosecco and a plate of chocolate covered strawberries which we enjoyed on our balcony. Then there was a Captain's reception where we had free cocktails before our formal night dinner. Exciting evening though. Some guest had to be evacuated by a coast guard helicopter to the Caicos Islands and then flown to Miami because of a medical emergency. After dinner, we peeked in the theater and watched the end of the show Mask.

Day 3: Monday 8/21/17 At Sea

After breakfast, we walked an hour on the walking deck. At 10 we had a Cruise Critic meet up in the Black and White Lounge and they served cocktails and h’oeuvre’s. Plus, they had a huge cake for us and we took a group picture. We met a nice couple Linda and JD from Paducah, Kentucky. Before lunch we talked to Natacha from Portugal who oversaw the Arts and Crafts. At noon, we had lunch in the Eataly Steakhouse. I had a 16-oz. ribeye and Don had this huge lobster! We also had appetizers of cold cuts and cheeses. For dessert Don had the cannoli and I had the bombolino which were like powdered donuts. After lunch, we ended up having a coffee drink at the coffee shop while we tried to figure out when the solar eclipse happened. Then we decided to walk to deck 16 and see what was going on. We found a nice spot where there were 5 other people hanging out: Brian and Kevin and their son David from Connecticut and Tasha and Jeremy from Colorado. Brian kept lending us his special glasses so we could see the eclipse which was very cool. We watched it until about 3:40. At 4, we went to a Veteran’s meetup and the only other person who showed was Brian. Then we had pre-dinner cocktails until we had to get ready for dinner. At dinner, they moved a new couple to our table: Shamali and Debra from Ft. Pierce. Shamali is a chef at a nuclear power plant and Debra works in a jail. About 6:30, Artie and Billie showed up. After dinner, we went back to the room to prepare for our next day in St. Maarten.

Day 4: Tuesday 8/22/17 St. Maarten

We got off the ship around 9am. We got to the beach (water taxi was $7 pp round trip) and got 2 chairs and an umbrella for $15. The guy started at $20 but when we said we would walk around first, he lowered it to $15. We got our bucket of beer from Caribbean Blend and it was $2 per beer so we ended up with 2 buckets of 6 beers while we were there. I got to visit my friend Suzette and gave her a shawl that I made. She was very busy in the restaurant. We left around 2:30 and came back to the ship. After cleaning up, we had a snack and an hour nap before going to dinner.

Day 5: Wednesday 8/23/17 San Juan

We got off the ship around 8:15 and walked to the fort on the right but we got there around 8:45 and it didn’t open until 9am so we walked to the fort on the left. It was already so hot and humid that I was soaked in sweat by the time we got there. We walked around and bought a Gatorade before leaving and walking around town. We walked about 5 miles before returning to the ship around 11:30. We ate lunch and talked to the executive chef (from England who now lives in Spain). Then we went back to the cabin to relax. On the way, they said that the dock was closed while the Allure of the Seas tied up and we watched as two ambulances were waiting. Eventually two gurneys were taken aboard ship so I hope those people are going to be okay. Then we relaxed in our cabin until 4pm. We had a cocktail before the Black card party. I was disappointed that I didn’t get to have a picture with the captain. After that we went to dinner and then came back to the cabin. I watched a Sex in the City movie until I went to sleep.

Day 6: Thursday 8/24/17 At Sea

After breakfast, we did our exercise walk. For lunch, we went to the Eataly Steakhouse and I had a filet mignon (8 oz.) with a side of peppercorn sauce and Don had the surf and turf (5 oz. filet mignon and lobster tail). Both were excellent! After lunch, we had a Chococinno at the coffee shop. The rest of the afternoon we relaxed on our balcony until it was time to get ready for the evening. We had pre-dinner cocktails in the Divina bar and then went to dinner. After dinner, we went to the Welcome Back party where we sat with Linda and JD and Brian and Kevin. Before we left, we got a picture with the Captain. Then we went to the show Treasure Island which I enjoyed. There were a lot of Cirque du Soleil type acts in the show.

Day 7: Friday 8/25/17 Nassau

We didn’t get off the ship at all. After breakfast we did our exercising. Then we went back to the cabin and packed until lunch time. After lunch we relaxed on our balcony until it was time to get ready for dinner. We picked up our free photo with the Captain and then we went on to dinner. After dinner we stopped for a cocktail before the show. Then we saw the show: Tribute to Michael Jackson. After the show we had a couple of frozen coffee drinks before returning to the cabin and putting our suitcases out in the hall.

Day 8: Saturday Debarkation

We had breakfast at 5:45 and then met in the Pantheon Theater by 7am. At 7:15, they escorted us off the ship. Getting our bags and out through customs was extremely fast and easy. We were in our car and on the road by 7:30. We got back home by 6:30pm.

Things I Learned:

1.     Champagne is sparkling wine from France; Prosecco is sparkling wine from Italy.

2.     The number of cruise critics are growing at their meet and greet but the number of people that signed up didn’t all show.

3.     The number of Black Card members are growing.

4.     They didn’t offer martinis at the Black Card party or the Welcome Back Party

5.     It was nice to see Carmelina the Guest Relations manager again.
