Useful Information In and Out of the Classroom 05/01/2020

Here are some interesting sites that I’ve found this week, thanks to my PLN. As a teacher, I feel we have to keep up to date concerning research in our field and current issues in the education system. I hope some of these inspire you, inform you, and even have you asking questions. Thank you for coming by and visiting!

Note: Each resource is labeled with a level and subject area to make it easier to use.

Levels:  E: Elementary; M: Middle; H: High; G: General, all levels; SN: Special Needs; T: Teachers

Subject Areas: LA: Language Arts, English, Reading, Writing; M: Math; S: Science; Health; SS: Social Studies, Current Events; FA: Fine Arts; Music, Art, Drama; FL: Foreign Language; PE: Physical Ed; C: Career; A: All

Poetry180 – “Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem on each of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address system.”  (L:H;SA:LA)

How tax brackets actually work – “There is a common misunderstanding about how tax brackets work in the US, and it’s causing us to have uninformed debates about taxes.” (L:H;SA:SS,M)

Taxes 101 – “In this video, you'll learn everything you need to know about the U.S. Tax system. We cover the ins & outs of how taxes are calculated, everything from deductibles to exemptions, as well as how our progressive tax system actually works.” (L:H;SA:SS,M)

Taxes--Where Does Your Money Go? – “ In this lesson students learn why the government taxes, where the money goes, and how different income brackets pay different taxes. They also learn about their individual responsibility to pay taxes, and that their gross salary does not always reflect what they will actually take home. Finally, the class will examine ways to lower taxes through deductions, retirement accounts, etc.” (L:H;SA:SS,M)

Live Storm Chasing –“ is the most interactive and immersive storm chasing experience available on the platforms you use most: computers, mobile devices, and TV's. This video (if you haven't watched the video yet we suggest you do) is just a flavor of the LIVE content that you can find on Live Storm Chasing. In fact, the events that took place in the video happened live for over 5,000 live viewers on October 10, 2018, right here on this platform. While chasers are not live 24/7, we do have video-on-demand content which features highlights of their chases. Some storm chasers who do not wish to stream can still feature their video on our site!”
