Happenings this week

Books:

  • Remarkably Bright Creatures - I read this in 2024, and I’m rereading it.
  • The River is Waiting - This is an audiobook that I listened to. I got halfway through, and it was so depressing that I gave up on it. I returned it to the library early.
Knitting:

  • Scrappy Socks for Don - It is so satisfying to use up my sock yarn scraps in this fun way.
  • Antique Filigree sweater - a colorwork sweater. I always forget how much I love colorwork! The exciting thing is that this whole sweater involves colorwork!
Food and drink:

  • Things I’ve cooked this week: Spinach and Mushroom quiche, stuffed peppers, and rice, pork burgers, and pickled beets.
  • I made green smoothies for us a couple of times this week.
Watching:

I’m watching some TV shows that I’m sure others have already watched, and I’m a little behind the times.
  • Tracker
  • Marshals
  • FBI
Special Events:

  • Don had a cortisone shot in his back.
  • I’m recovering from my second cataract surgery.

Fruits and vegetables:

  • We picked lots of blueberries and some figs today.
  • I also found little tomatoes growing on my tomato plants.

Blueberry Bushes and Fig Tree

I can’t believe how early the blueberry bushes bloomed. I guess it is because it has been so warm here. Now we have blueberries on them, which we don’t usually have until June. We also found some figs on the fig tree. Usually, we have to fight the birds and squirrels for this fruit, but since I started hanging CDs from the branches, it has helped keep them away.

Summer Harvest: Watermelons

The #5004 2015 First‑Class Forever Stamp – Summer Harvest: Watermelons celebrates one of America’s sweetest summer fruits. It is one of a block of 4 Forever stamps (2015 Summer Harvest - Block of 4 Forever Stamps - Scott #5004-7). Issued on July 11, 2015, at the California State Fair in Sacramento, it’s part of a four‑stamp booklet featuring corn, cantaloupes, tomatoes, and watermelons. Each stamp, including the watermelon one, is a Forever stamp, which means it always pays the 1‑ounce first‑class postage, regardless of price changes.

This watermelon stamp draws its design from vintage crate labels used in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Back then, farmers packed produce in wooden crates and used bright, eye‑catching labels to stand out on the railroad and market shelves. The design mirrors old seed packets and catalog art. The bold lettering and ripe watermelon illustration were drawn by artist Michael Doret, following early art director sketches by Richard Sheaff and design by Antonio Alcalá. These details make it a great item for stamp collectors and a fun way for kids to learn about history, art, and how mail works—all in one little square!

National Watermelon Day is celebrated every year on August 3, and it’s a special time to enjoy one of summer’s most refreshing fruits. This juicy day honors watermelon’s long history, dating back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt, when watermelon seeds were even found in King Tut’s tomb. Watermelon is made of about 92% water, so it helps keep us cool and hydrated, especially on hot summer days. On this day, families and friends enjoy watermelon in many fun ways: cutting slices, making fruit salads, having seed-spitting contests, and even carving giant slices into creative shapes. It’s a tasty, healthy, and playful celebration that makes summer even sweeter!

Summer Time Heat

It’s summer time and I just can’t seem to be motivated to do much in this heat.

On July 1, I started teaching my university course which luckily keeps me indoors most of the morning.

Of course, this means that we have to go to breakfast early and I can’t get out in the yard to work in the yard before it gets too hot. On the weekend,, it was cloudy so I got outside and worked in the yard. I spend most of the day in my sunroom with the shades down to keep out the heat and I feel like I’m in a cave!

Our blueberry crop is finally at the end of its run but we got lots of blueberries this year. Not only did we get some but so did two of our neighbors. I loved being able to share with them. We have a few figs on the tree but I'm not sure I will be able to get to them before the squirrels do.

Staying indoors has helped me get some knitting done. I started a summer sweater (the Salty Air Tee), finished a pair of socks, and knitted many charity dishcloths.

So far, July has been a productive month!
